What Is OBD II ( OBDII )?

What Is OBD II ( OBDII )?

OBD II, also known as OBDII, OBD-II, OBD2 or an ECU reader, and comparable with it’s European counterpart, EOBD, is the way your vehicle can communicates with a computer. It has been standardized throughout the US as OBD II ( OBD2 ) and Europe as EOBD. Think of it this way, OBDII is a language, but there are several dialects within this language. These would be the Protocols.  Digimoto is a multi-protocol solution supporting ISO14230-4 (KWP2000), ISO9141-2, J1850 VPW and J1850 PWM and ISO15765-4 (CAN). The standards were developed by Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) to monitor emissions. However over time, OBD-II has developed into a system for more complete engine monitoring and control, as well as the ability to monitor parts of the chassis, body, and accessory devices.

Will it work on my car?

All cars and light trucks built and sold in the USA after January 1st 1996 have been required to be OBDII compliant. You can verify whether or not your vehicle is OBDII compliant by viewing a sticker most often found underneath the hood of your car. If your vehicle has an OBDII sticker, it will be compliant with our system.  EOBD is the European standard equivalent of OBDII ( OBD2 ). The EOBD standard required all petrol based vehicles manufactured and sold in the European Union after the year 2000 are EOBD compliant. It also required all diesel based vehicles manufactured and sold after the year 2003 to be EOBD compliant. Our automotive diagnostic solution will work with OBD2 and EOBD compliant vehicles. The CAN (Controller Area Network) protocol is the next generation protocol for OBDII ( OBD-II ). All vehicles manufactured and sold in the USA after January 1st 2008 must be CAN compliant. You will find many earlier OBD II vehicles already supported this protocol, most within the last few years. Our solution is fully CAN compliant, meaning you will be able to use this tool on vehicles, as is, for many years to come.
